Real streets.
One flag.
Hit. Steal. Escape.

An arcade capture-the-flag game played on real cities, rebuilt from OpenStreetMap at one and a half times life size so the streets are wide enough to chase through. There are no weapons. The only way to take the flag is to hit the car carrying it, hard enough.

  • streets from the arena file
  • street under your pointer
  • a flag's route, illustrated
  • drop zone

The rules fit on the flag

Every round is the same four moves on a different street. The flag drops, everybody races for it, whoever has it runs for the drop zone, and everybody else tries to hit them hard enough to take it.

Nine real places in four cities

Each arena is built from OpenStreetMap and the elevation under it, so the hills, underpasses and bridges are the real ones. The figures below are counted from the arena files the game loads.

Each place comes in sizes for the number of cars — small for up to four, medium for five or six, large for seven or eight — except Kadıköy and Marina Ridge, which play their medium maps for seven or eight too, for now. Five looks — Rain Noir, City Night, Neon Night, Synthwave and Golden Hour — are one key apart, and the rules are the same in all of them. Rain Noir's weather changes as you play, from drizzle to thunderstorms, and four camera views include the driver's seat.

Measured, not guessed

Twelve fixed-seed matches between four bots on Russian Hill, replayed after every change, so tuning is judged against numbers rather than impressions. The parts numbers cannot judge get played instead.

These come from the build you can download. Since 0.1.8 two axles of tyres turn the car: it carries its turn after the wheel straightens, leans into a corner and can be caught sliding, and the bots learned to drive it. The handling figures are measured on flat ground.

Play it on a Mac or a Windows PC

Free. On a Mac, open the disk image and drag Hitflag to Applications; it is signed with a Developer ID and notarised by Apple. On Windows, run the installer: it puts Hitflag in Program Files, with a Start menu entry and an uninstaller.

  • Pre-production. The game works, and it is not finished.
  • Online is new. It reaches friends anywhere through Unity's services, which sign each copy in without an account, but it has not yet been played between two computers.
  • Windows is new. This build has not been played on a PC yet. From 0.2.0 it tells you when there is a new version and opens its installer; a PC with 0.1.9 needs this page once more.
  • Windows is not signed yet. The first time, Windows says it protected your PC: choose More info, then Run anyway.
Properties · Hitflag 0.3.20/downloads
  • It keeps itself current. Hitflag checks for a new version when it starts and offers it in its menus. On a Mac, accept and it downloads and checks it, then restarts into it; opened straight from the disk image, it offers to move itself into Applications first. On Windows it opens the new installer: quit, run it, and the game is updated where it is.
  • On a Mac it only installs builds from the same developer. An update must carry the same Developer ID signature and be accepted by macOS, so a replaced download cannot become an update.
  • Damage and car vitality. High-speed impacts dent car panels, smash headlights and mirrors, and blow radiator smoke when cars are battered, fully synchronized across online matches.
  • Procedural graphics layers. Ten procedural layers: night sky clouds, moon and stars, anamorphic glints, asphalt road wear, FXAA, headlight volumetric cones in rain, swaying trees in storm winds, rear tyre mist plumes, illuminated rain streaks in headlight beams, and interior window life with flickering television sets.
  • Keyboard, gamepad or mouse steering. The game opens on a main menu with a card for every place, drawn from its own streets, and picks two to eight cars, free-for-all or teams, mouse sensitivity, and the look, from a gamepad as well; you play them against bots, or with friends.
  • Online with anyone. Play online, on the menu's Online row, joins an open game on the same version or opens one that others find. Friends can also join with a code, or on the same network. Bots drive the cars nobody took, and a player who arrives during a match plays from the next one. Power-ups work online as they do offline; there is no traffic online yet. On a local network, the first time, your Mac or PC may ask whether Hitflag can use it: allow it.
  • Steam is the target. Until then the Mac and Windows builds come from this page.
